The Summer Olympics are more prestigious and higher-profile than the Winter Olympics.
They feature a larger variety of more events sports, and a number of participants. Audiences are also attracted by them.
Although the Summer Olympics could be traced back to Ancient Greece, the first”contemporary” Olympics were held in 1896. Only 241 athletes in fourteen countries took part back then, however, the competition has grown and evolved significantly through the years.
The most recent Summer Olympics were held in Rio, Brazil, in 2016. Over eleven million athletes from every nation in the world took part. There was a total of 306 events spread across twenty-eight distinct sports.
A portion of the growth of the Summer Olympics has been in the selection of sports which it features. Only a few sports have been featured such as athletics, swimming, and gymnastics, at every Games. While some feature in a few years but not others, other sports are introduced and then eliminated.
The governing body of the Olympic Games — the International Olympic Committee (IOC) — is ultimately responsible for determining which sports feature and that don’t. They established that the Olympic Programme Commission in 2004 to handle this, setting seven standards by which to judge the qualification of a game. These criteria include the tradition and history of its popularity, a sport, and its own image.
Their decisions cause widespread debate. As an example, it being suggested that video gaming may comprise at future Olympics. Even the esports community is supporting this idea, as you would expect, but there are lots of people who do not believe that gambling should even be considered a sport.
There are several sports making their first appearance. These include skateboarding, karate, and surfing. They will be part of a program of more than three hundred events in total, in more than half sports.
